Reported speech  คือคำพูดที่ผู้อื่นเก็บไปพูด อาจมีวิธีพูดได้ 2 วิธี คือ 

1. โดยยกคำพูดจริง ๆ ของผู้พูดไปเล่าให้ฟังทั้งหมดโดยไม่เปลี่ยนแปลง เรียกว่า Direct Speech เช่นArt said, "I like Mathematics."  ข้อความว่า "I like Mathematics" เป็น Direct Speech

2. โดยดัดแปลงเป็นคำพูดของผู้เล่าเอง เรียกว่า Indirect Speech หรือ Reported Speech เช่น Art said (that) he liked Mathematics.            ข้อความว่า "he liked Mathematics" ดัดแปลงมาจากคำพูดของ Art ที่ พูดว่า "I like Mathematics" ดังนั้นข้อความนี้จึงเป็น Indirect Speech หรือ Reported Speech

คำกริยาที่ใช้กับ Reported Speech เรียกว่า กริยานำ (Reporting Verbs หรือ Introducing Verbs) เช่น
1. say (said)        = พูดว่า
2. know (knew)    = รู้ว่า
3. hope (hoped)   = หวังว่า
4. think (thought)  = คิดว่า

เช่น
(1) Art said, "I like Mathematics."
(2) Art said (that) he liked Mathematics.

คำกริยา said ในประโยค (1) เรียกว่า กริยานำ (Reporting Verb)
ข้อความว่า (that) he liked Mathematics ในประโยค (2) เรียก คำเล่า (Indirect Speech หรือ Reported Speech)

Reported Speech มี 3 แบบใหญ่ ๆ คือ
1. Reported Statement (บอกเล่าและปฏิเสธ)
2. Reported Request and Command (ขอร้องและคำสั่ง)
3. Reported Questions (คำถาม)
ซึ่งมีวิธีการเปลี่ยนจาก Direct Speech เป็น Reported Speech ที่แตกต่างกันดังนี้
